Supporting Every Child in Maths: Our Daily Intervention Approach
We believe in helping children keep up with their learning rather than having to catch up later. That’s why we’ve introduced daily maths interventions which short, focused sessions designed to give children the support they need to succeed in their maths lessons.
What Is Daily Maths Intervention?
Every day, selected children take part in a short (10–15 minute) maths session that helps them prepare for or reinforce the day’s learning. These sessions are delivered by the class teacher and are closely linked to the main maths lesson, ensuring children feel confident and ready to learn.
Why It Matters
Maths builds on previous knowledge. If a child misses a key idea, it can affect their understanding of future topics. Our daily interventions help children stay on track by:
- Addressing misunderstandings quickly
- Building confidence before new learning
- Reinforcing important skills and vocabulary
Pre-Teaching: A Head Start
One of the most effective strategies we use is pre-teaching. This means introducing key ideas, vocabulary, and methods before the main lesson. It helps children:
- Recognise and understand new concepts more easily
- Feel more confident participating in class
- Reduce the mental load of learning something completely new
What Do These Sessions Include?
- Key Vocabulary: Children learn and practise the words they’ll hear in the lesson.
- Core Skills: Teachers revisit important skills that support new learning.
- Misconception Checking: Teachers help children spot and correct common mistakes.
Who Takes Part?
Children are selected based on what they need to succeed in that day’s lesson. This might be:
- A short-term boost for a specific topic
- Ongoing support for a longer unit
- Additional help for children with special educational needs (in consultation with our SENDCo or Maths Lead)
Groupings are flexible and responsive. Our goal is to give the right support at the right time.
