Our Approach to Reading

Reading at Pensilva Primary School

The ability to read is fundamental to pupils` development as independent learners.


At Pensilva Primary School, reading is given a high priority.  Children are initially taught to read using the widely acclaimed Read Write Inc programme.  We teach children through fast paced and exciting lessons using carefully matched resources and books.  This provides a rigorous approach to the teaching of phonics and reading. 


Throughout the school, our pupils are encouraged to read, listen to and discuss a range of text types.  Comprehension skills are taught to enable the children to reflect and interpret texts, to ask and respond to questions and to deepen their understanding of a range of texts.  Reading development is closely related to that of writing and reflecting upon and talking about the texts they encounter supports pupils’ understanding of how writers write and the special relationship which exists between author and reader. It is through their critical and imaginative engagement with texts that pupils` reading of fiction, poetry and non-fiction texts enables them to make sense of the world and their place in it.

There are books everywhere around the school, including in every classroom, and each class has regular visits to our lovely library. We have very strong links with Cornwall Educational Library Services who loan us topic boxes full of wonderful books each term and visit us twice yearly with their mobile library.  We also have visits from Liskeard Library who run various reading challenges.


Reading for interest and for pleasure is strongly encouraged.  At Pensilva Primary School we love to read!
